Participatory banks in Morocco: pointers to understand how they work
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Moroccan participatory banks offer accounts and financing based on contracts such as murabaha, ijara or musharaka. Their products undergo a religious compliance validation before being offered.
A regulated framework
They operate under the supervision of Bank Al-Maghrib. Their products must receive a favourable opinion from a religious body, the Sharia Committee for Participatory Finance, attached to the Higher Council of Ulema.
What they offer
Offers are close to those of conventional banks, with different contracts.
- Current and investment accounts.
- Home and vehicle financing (murabaha, ijara, diminishing musharaka).
- Equipment financing for professionals.
- Savings products based on profit sharing.
How to compare
Compare the total price to pay, fees and penalties, and ask for the contracts. Participatory financing is not automatically cheaper: its value lies in the contract's compliance and transparency. Ask how late-payment penalties are handled.
Frequently asked
Does a participatory bank guarantee a return?
Not for investment accounts, whose profit depends on results. A current account is available but does not earn a promised return.
