Couple budgeting: handling two incomes without conflict
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
There is no single model for a couple's money. What matters is deciding together, in writing, what is shared and what stays personal, and meeting regularly to review.
Three common models
Each has advantages depending on the income gap and trust.
- All shared: simple, needs great transparency.
- Proportional shares: each pays in according to income into a shared-costs account.
- Separate with a fixed contribution: each keeps an account and pays a set amount.
Deciding together
Set the list of shared costs (housing, food, children), the amount to pay in, and a free personal sum for each, with no justification. That free sum avoids a lot of tension.
Meeting once a month
Twenty minutes a month, not when you are tired, is enough to look at the money left to live on, upcoming deadlines and joint projects. Talking about money regularly makes it less emotionally charged.
Frequently asked
Are proportional shares fairer?
Often, when incomes differ a lot: each contributes according to their means. The right model is the one both accept.
