Fixed and variable costs: the difference and how to sort them
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
A fixed cost returns on a date and amount that barely change, like rent. A variable cost changes with your consumption, like groceries. Separating them shows where you really have room to move.
Fixed costs
They are known in advance and hard to cut in the short term.
- Rent or housing instalment.
- Insurance, subscriptions, school fees, any loan.
- Scheduled saving and regular sadaqah, treated as fixed.
Variable costs
They depend on your choices that month and are the first place to adjust when money is tight.
- Food, daily transport, coffee.
- Clothes, going out, gifts.
- Routine health and small repairs.
Yearly costs
Car insurance, a tax or back-to-school fall once a year but weigh on the whole year. Divide them by twelve and set that sum aside each month: a yearly cost becomes a fixed monthly one.
Frequently asked
Is saving a fixed cost?
Yes, if you schedule it on payday: by treating it as a fixed cost you pay it first instead of saving whatever is left.
