Writing down a debt and taking witnesses: what verse 282 recommends
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Verse 282 of Surah Al-Baqarah recommends writing down any debt due at a later date and taking witnesses. This practice protects both parties, avoids forgetting and prevents conflict.
Why write it down
Memory fades and relationships suffer from misunderstandings over an amount or a date. A simple written note clarifies what was agreed and lets everyone stay calm, even among relatives.
What the note should contain
A short acknowledgement of debt is enough.
- Names of both parties and date.
- Exact amount and purpose of the loan.
- Due date or detailed schedule.
- Mention: interest-free loan.
- Signatures, with one or two witnesses if possible.
Keep a record
Keep the note, record each repayment with its date, and hand over a receipt at the end. A debt-tracking app helps keep this information but is not a contract: for a large sum, a signed document remains preferable.
Frequently asked
Should I write down even a small sum lent to a relative?
For a very small sum, a simple message may suffice. The larger the amount or the longer the term, the more a signed document is advised.
