Zakat on gold and jewellery: what is due and what is debated
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Gold held as a store of value is subject to zakat once it reaches the nisab. For worn jewellery, schools differ: it is one of the most discussed topics in zakat.
Savings gold
Bars, coins or jewellery bought mainly to keep value are zakatable when the total reaches 85 grams of pure gold and a lunar year has passed. The calculation uses the gold price on the due date.
Worn jewellery
Opinions differ.
- Most schools, including the Maliki school followed in Morocco, do not require it for lawful jewellery worn regularly and without excess.
- The Hanafi school requires it.
- Jewellery kept mainly as savings or in excessive quantity is generally treated as savings gold.
What to do in practice
Distinguish what is worn from what is kept as a reserve. If you doubt your case, consult a qualified person, and some choose to pay out of caution. Note the pure gold weight of each piece for the calculation.
Frequently asked
How do I know the pure gold weight of a piece?
Look at the carat hallmark: 18-carat gold is 75% pure, 24-carat is 100%. Weigh the piece and multiply by the percentage.
