Zakat on salary: pay monthly or yearly?
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
According to the majority, it is the money set aside that is zakatable, once the nisab is reached and a year has passed, not each salary on its own. Some people nevertheless prefer to set a little aside each month.
The general principle
A salary is first used to live. What remains as savings, once the nisab is reached and the hawl completed, is subject to zakat at 2.5%. Everyday spending already consumed is not counted.
Two ways to organise
Both are practised.
- Once a year, on a fixed date, on the savings held that day.
- An estimated monthly provision, set aside in a dedicated account, then paid on the due date.
An example
If you hold 70,000 DH of savings above the nisab on your yearly date, zakat is 1,750 DH (70,000 × 2.5%). By setting aside about 146 DH a month, the sum is ready with no cash shock. Fictional figures, to adapt.
