Halal investing: the basic principles
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
A halal investment rests on a few principles: no interest, no prohibited sector, no excessive uncertainty, and a gain tied to a real risk. These principles are checked before investing, not after.
The principles
Four markers to keep in mind.
- No riba: no interest received or paid in a structural way.
- No prohibited sectors: alcohol, pork, gambling, interest-based finance and so on.
- No excessive gharar: the product and its risks must be understood.
- Risk sharing: the gain follows a real risk, not a guaranteed return.
Common asset types
Screened shares, compliant investment funds, sukuk, rental property, physical gold, participation in a real activity. Each has its risks and compliance rules.
Before investing
Never invest money for a near deadline, keep an emergency fund available and diversify. Ask: "Where does the gain come from, and who carries the risk?" AmanaFi does not give personalised investment advice: consult a licensed professional.
Frequently asked
Is there a risk-free halal investment?
No: every investment carries risk, and risk sharing is precisely the principle. For availability and safety, keep an emergency fund in cash.
