Sadaqah: definition, broad meaning and difference from zakat
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Sadaqah is a gift made out of pure generosity, with no obligation of amount or date. Prophetic tradition widens its meaning: any good deed, a smile included, can be a sadaqah.
Sadaqah and zakat
Zakat is an obligation with a set rate and conditions. Sadaqah is free and can be given at any time.
- Zakat: obligatory, 2.5% on eligible savings.
- Sadaqah: voluntary, any amount, any person.
- They complement each other, one does not replace the other.
Varied forms
You can give money, food, time, advice, a skill. Helping a neighbour, feeding someone fasting, sponsoring studies or lending interest-free are all forms of sadaqah.
Regularity rather than size
A modest but regular gift is easier to keep than one big exceptional gift. Planning a small sadaqah line in the monthly budget makes generosity lasting, even on a limited income.
Frequently asked
Can I give sadaqah on a small income?
Yes. There is no minimum amount, and tradition values even a modest gift. Sincerity and regularity are what matter.
