Eid al-Adha budget: preparing the sacrifice without getting into difficulty

AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read

For many scholars, the Eid al-Adha sacrifice is a confirmed sunnah for those who can afford it, not an obligation for those who cannot. Preparing it in advance avoids emergency borrowing.

A budget to spread out

The price of a sheep varies between years and regions. Find out in advance, set a realistic envelope and set money aside every month, at least six months ahead. Include side costs: transport, slaughter, freezing.

Avoid debt that causes hardship

If your situation does not allow the sacrifice without borrowing, many scholars consider it inadvisable to take on heavy debt for it. Choose an animal suited to your means, take part in a shared purchase if permitted in your case, or postpone.

Sharing

The meat is generally divided among family, relatives and people in need. Plan for this in the budget: transport, storage and time. For detailed rules, consult a qualified person.

Frequently asked

Is the sacrifice obligatory?

Many scholars, including the Maliki school, consider it a confirmed sunnah for those who can afford it. For your precise case, ask a qualified person.
