Sadaqah to family and relatives: a double reward
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Tradition reports that charity to a relative has a double reward: that of the gift and that of the family tie. It is given with delicacy, so as not to create embarrassment or dependence.
What is possible
You can help a brother, sister, uncle or cousin in need, provided you are not already obliged to support them. For those you support (parents, children, spouse), it is family spending and not zakat.
Helping with delicacy
A few pointers for giving without offending.
- Offer discreetly rather than wait for a request.
- Give as a service or by paying a bill directly if simpler.
- Never mention the help given.
- Clarify whether it is a gift or a loan, to avoid misunderstandings.
Keeping balance
Set what you can give without weakening your own budget, and include it in your monthly spending. Regular, limited help is better than large but one-off help followed by difficulties.
Frequently asked
Can zakat be given to a brother or sister?
Generally yes, if they meet its conditions and you do not have to support them. Consult a qualified person for your precise case.
