Checking a charity before giving: seven questions to ask
AmanaFi team · Updated · 1 min read
Giving to a charity is an act of trust, worth checking. A few simple questions tell a serious organisation from a doubtful approach.
Seven useful questions
A serious charity answers without difficulty.
- Is it registered and legally recognised?
- Does it publish accounts or an activity report?
- What exactly are the funds raised used for?
- What share goes to running costs?
- Does it give a receipt?
- Can you see concrete results?
- Is it known to people you trust?
Warning signs
Beware of pressure to give right now, requests for transfers to personal accounts, unrealistic promises of results and refusal to answer questions. A good project withstands checking.
For zakat in particular
Make sure the charity passes zakat on to the intended categories of recipients, and keeps that money apart from other gifts. When in doubt, favour giving directly to people you know or to an organisation you were able to verify.
Frequently asked
Where can I find information about a charity?
On its website, in its activity reports, from its beneficiaries and from trusted people around you. A transparent charity answers readily.
